This Order was a secret society of technologists and alchemists founded by smelters and mine owners in 1577, as a research group for secret German technology (including alchemy). The results of which were placed in a secret chest called the Archa, and guarded by an elite.

According to scholar Karl Frick, at their meetings a bible, skull and hourglass were placed on the table, in a room decorated with their symbols, the Sun, Moon and stars, a compass, circle and three globes, and a female figure representing Pansophia. Their initiations were based on ascending seven steps to reach the 'source of wisdom', or later the 'high architect' (perhaps indicating later Masonic colonization).

They consisted of a hierarchy of five grades, the first three being symbolised by a silver cross and the last two by a gold cross, in which alchemy was practised.

There is speculation that there was in fact seven grades and that the last two corresponded to the guardians of the Archa. These grades allegedly wore a 'golden and rosy cross'. Further more rumour had it the 'Rose' was an oriental symbol taken from secret rites of a scandalous nature (taken to indicate sexual rites by many).

This inner circle has been identified with the last of the Rosicrucians to survive in Germany. See Society of the Golden and Rosy Cross. It may even have been a precursor of the FRC.
